MERIDEN, CT (09-21-2007) - Sister Jilda Marie Chabot, FSE, R.N., B.S.N. was awarded the "2007 Safe Passage" award by the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care at a luncheon and award ceremony on September 21st in recognition of her excellence in clinical end of life care in Connecticut.

The Coalition is a 110-member organization comprising health care agencies, hospitals, universities and professionals. Sister Jilda Marie was recommended for the award by Dr. Audrey Lefkowitz, Medical Director of Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care, and Maria Buno, the daughter of a hospice care patient for whom Sister Jilda Marie provided nursing services.

The citation presented to Sister Jilda Marie by Ruth McCorkle, Chair of the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care, reads as follows:

Mastering the constantly evolving science of end-of-life care takes a keen intellect. Providing state-of-the-art nursing care while delivering dignified palliative and bereavement care takes a great soul. To the great benefit of patients admitted to Franciscan Home Care and Hospice program, Sister Jilda Marie Chabot possesses both. What is more: her gift for leadership has helped her expand her good work beyond her own nursing practice to influence the standard of care across the home care and hospice program by her example. Sister Jilda Marie has made it her mission to champion dignified, holistic care for dying patients and their families. She has strived for excellence throughout her nursing career starting as a nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, and a baccalaureate graduate. She has continued her education through workshops on wound care, pain assessment and management, cardiac arrhythmias, and death and dying.

The compassionate care that families receive in the Franciscan Home Care and Hospice program continues even after a patient's death, thanks to the efforts of Sister Jilda. The Medical Director describes Sister Jilda Marie as "competent, compassionate, and caring. She is committed to upholding the dignity of the human person and she is respected by her peers, the hospice team, and deeply loved by her patients." One daughter whose mother died under the care of Sister Jilda wrote "my mother experiences a great deal of pain and Sister worked with me to manage the pain with morphine and anxiety medication. She helped to prepare me for what was ahead and I remember wanting to capture every moment of the time I had left with her. I felt so blessed to be a part of the experience. I also know it would not have been possible without the guidance of Sister Jilda. I believe that this award would be the greatest thank you to Sister Jilda Marie for devoting her life selflessly to her patients and families."

In recognition of her untiring efforts on behalf of her patients, their families and the staff of Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Program, the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care is proud to present the 2007 Safe Passage Award for Outstanding Clinical Care to Sister Jilda Marie.
