Blake Peters presents her request for novitiate to Mother Shaun Vergauwen, FSE, Mother General.
MERIDEN, CT (01-04-2007) - Blake Peters, daughter of David and Mary Lou Peters, Windsor, Connecticut, became a novice of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist at a ceremony held in the Community chapel on the memorial of St. Elizabeth Seton. Mother Shaun Vergauwen, Mother General, named Miss Peters Sister Sophia and encouraged her to seek ever-deeper wisdom as her name signifies. Blake spent the past year as a postulant, the first official phase of religious formation. Upon receiving the habit, veil and cincture of the Community, she enters into the next phase, known as novitiate.

Sister Sophia received a Bachelor of Arts with majors in International Studies and Spanish from Washington University, St. Louis, in 2002. Prior to attending university, she participated in a one year Rotary Exchange Program in Punta Arenas and Vina del Mar, Chile, where she studied geography and history. She also lived in Spain and Italy and traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East. In Guatemala, she provided volunteer services for homeless children. While in college, she was part of a month-long service trip to the Philippines.

Mother Shaun gives Blake her new name, Sister Sophia.

From 2002 to 2004, she was employed at Oxfam, an international non-profit agency in Boston, where she worked as a Program Associate for the South American and East Asia grant programs. For the past two years she has worked as receptionist at the Franciscan Life Center, Meriden. Sister Sophia is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Central Connecticut State University.
