Tri-community pilgrims to Germany share heritage

ETTENBEUREN, GERMANY (06-13-2006) - Sisters from three congregations are on pilgrimage to their common roots in Germany from June 6-20. Five Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist joined Sisters from the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis, Wisconsin (near Milwaukee), and the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, La Crosse, Wisconsin, to travel to Germany and visit places significant in the common heritage of the three orders.

While in Ettenbeuren, Bavaria, on Sunday, June 11th, the Sisters were surprised by a ceremony in the village to dedicate a new street to Ottilie Dirr, the leader of the group that left Ettenbeuren and arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1849 to start a religious foundation. From the original Ettenbeuren missionaries, the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration were formed. Some of the early Sisters chose to stay in Milwaukee when the motherhouse moved to La Crosse. Those Sisters formed the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1973 fifty-five Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Thus, all three communities trace their roots to the village of Ettenbeuren.

In recent years, the three communities have undertaken a process of reconciliation. Pilgrimages to their common roots in Germany have been a part of that process. Reverend Manfred Krumm, a native of Ettenbeuren, has supported and encouraged the effort. Parishioners from Father Krumm's parish in Augsburg and villagers have welcomed the Sisters wholeheartedly. This year, five Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist are representing the community in the tri-community pilgrimage: Sister Helen Jean Brinkman, Sister Patricia Glass, Sister Marcia Ternes, Sister Ann Frances Thompson and Sister Damien Marie Savino.
