Houston Sisters continue to help hurricane victims

HOUSTON, TX (10-10-2005) - The Franciscan Sisters in Houston were among the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to help persons evacuated from Louisiana and Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. The Sisters have spent hours at volunteer centers assisting the evacuees in efforts to find housing and to resettle after losing everything in the hurricane.

Pictured here are children from the Bell family who lost their homes in the 9th Ward in New Orleans and are now attending schools in Houston. The Sisters (along with Sr. Veronica's mother, also pictured) took the children to an educational museum this past weekend. Since the hurricane, the Sisters have been collecting kitchen appliances, dishes, bedding and furniture for this extended family whose 22 members have found temporary housing but still need basic supplies and furnishings.
