FSE Campus Ministry Director, Sr. Clare Hunter, helps organize Houston procession honoring Pope John Paul II

HOUSTON (4-8-2005) - Sister Clare Hunter, FSE, and a small group of students from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, organized a candle-light procession through the city of Houston as a way of publicly displaying their love of our late Holy Father. The procession began at midnight at the Sacred Heart Co-Cathredral, passing through downtown streets, and ending up two miles away on the university's campus where all were invited to pray a rosary and then, at 3:00 a.m., watch the funeral of Pope John Paul II, broadcast live from Rome on a jumbo outdoor screen. The students' idea blossomed when a local businessman, "Mattress Mac", heard about the idea and asked to sponsor and publicize the event, taking out a full-page ad in the Houston Chronicle inviting the city to participate. Nearly 2,000 participated in the event with a reverence and commitment that impacted the whole city, as was evidenced in the great television, radio and newspaper coverage the next day.

Sister Clare is the campus ministry director at the University of St. Thomas. She was inspired by the Holy Father when she attended World Youth Day in Poland in 1991. Since becoming a Franciscan Sister, she has received a Masters degree in Theology from John Paul II Institute, Washington, D.C. Sister Clare enthusiastically promotes the Holy Father's teachings in her work and in seminars on marriage and sexuality. MSNBC televised an interview with Sister Clare about the Houston event.
