Young Adults Teach Students in Tanzania August 10, 2004 - Two Franciscan Sisters and a university professor led a group of nine young adults on a month long missionary outreach to Tanzania in late July. The program was sponsored in part by the University of St. Thomas, Houston, in reponse to an invitation by one of the bishops in Tanzania. Sister Clare Hunter, FSE, of the Campus Ministry at the University of St. Thomas, Sister Naomi Zimmermann, FSE, from the Franciscan center in the Holy Land, and Dr. Richard Fossey of the University of St. Thomas coordinated the effort. The young people are teaching English, science and mathematics to high school students in Mbeya, as well as spending time with AIDS patients and orphaned children whose parents have died of the disease. They also are making trips to the bush country to see its wild animals and spectacular beauty at close range. The young people who are offering their skills and knowledge to the African students are themselves being educated in the conditions of life in Africa.
