Franciscan Nurse Receives Advocacy Award Lowell, Michigan (May 13, 2004) - Sister Judith Gebelein, FSE, RN, has received one of the 2004 Outstanding Nurse Awards for her work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Four hundred nurses attended the awards dinner at which Sister Judith and four other nurses were honored. The awards are bestowed on persons exemplifying one of five qualities of excellence as a nurse - Advocacy, Spirituality, Knowledge, Compassionate Care and Collaboration. Sister Judith received the award for Advocacy. In conferring the pins and plaques symbolic of the achievement, the award committee emphasized the importance of leadership and the value of doing something for others. The nominations for the award were particularly meaningful in that they came from peers who work with Sister Judith. They cited her knowledge of neurological and orthopedic nursing and her consistency in expecting the best from herself and co-workers. Her ability to advocate for the welfare of her patients was a common theme in all of the recommendations on Sister Judith’s behalf. She is known by doctors, nurses, patient care aides and professionals of other disciplines for her high standards in patient care and medical ethics. Her skills are not limited to the patients on her floor; Sister Judith also advocates for quality health care through her participation on committees which make policies impacting health care. She contributes to the level of care because of her ability to educate and guide other health care professionals. Sister Judith has worked at St. Mary’s Hospital since 1981 and has 23 years of experience in orthopedic/neurological nursing. |
