Mother Shaun Vergauwen Receives Noteworthy Woman Award

Meriden, CT (Apr. 20, 2004) - Mother Shaun Vergauwen, FSE, was recently honored as one of Connecticut’s “Twenty Noteworthy Women” for 2004 by the editors of the New Haven Business Times. Recipients of the Award were chosen because of their prominence as role models and their singular professional contributions to the communities in which they live. The Business Times cited Mother Shaun’s achievements as Vicar General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist Community and as Executive Director of the Franciscan Life Center. Her dedication to the ideal of religious life devoted to service centered in love of the Eucharist, a vision she shares with Co-foundress Mother Rosemae Pender, FSE, has brought into being a religious community with a unique charism and giftedness for the Church.

Mother Shaun has also held the vision for the development of the Meriden Center over the past 30 years. She has overseen the building of the present Franciscan Life Center structure, the Paul VI Center, a residence for the Sisters, and the Chiara Center, a retreat center for women, including those considering a religious vocation. She directs the considerable work involved in landscaping and caring for the grounds of the campuses and takes an active part in all aspects of life at the center. The Franciscan Life Center, which began with two rooms and a small number of clients, has grown into an outpatient mental health facility which serves more than 2000 families.
