Mother General Receives Decree to Establish Franciscan Brothers of the Eucharist

December 25, 2002
Meriden, Connecticut

Mother Rosemae Pender, Mother General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist announced today that she has received a decree from Archbishop Daniel Cronin, Archbishop of Hartford, to establish formally the Franciscan Brothers of the Eucharist as a public association. With this step, a group of men who have been in relationship to the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist for many years, will be recognized with canonical status in their process of eventually becoming the men's branch of the Connecticut-based Franciscan order of women.

In speaking of this historic moment, Mother Rosemae said she is overjoyed at the possibility of moving forward with the vision of founding a group of Brothers in complement with the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, a pontifical order founded in 1973.

The newly approved Brothers include Thomas A. Elliott, a senior computer consultant and programmer, Martin Grealy, social worker, and Joseph Maneri, landscape artist. As Franciscan Brothers they will be known as Brother Angelo Elliott, Brother Rufino Grealy and Brother Leo Maneri. Their names are the same as three of St. Francis' original followers who are buried at the tomb of their father Francis of Assisi.
