Island Sinfonia Concerts Scheduled for San Juan Islands

April 20, 2001. Shaw Island, Washington.

Under the direction of Sister Kateri Visocky, FSE, the 17-member chamber orchestra known as the Island Sinfonia will present three performances this spring at Orcas, Lopez and Shaw islands.

The concerts will feature works of Handel, Bartok, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn. Sister Kateri has been the director of the group since its inception in the mid-1980s. Over the years, membership and instrumentation have changed, and today these local musicians form an ensemble of strngs, woodwinds, brass and percussion. One year, the group performed "Water Music" on the ferry as their spring concert.

Sister Kateri, foundress of San Pietro Music Studio on Shaw Island, has been teaching music for over 35 years. She received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Viterbo College, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and a Master's degree in Music Education from Willamette University. She has composed hymns for the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, adding her unique musical creativity to the Community's repertoire of liturgical hymns.
