Our Foundresses

Mother Rosemae Pender, FSE and Mother Shaun Vergauwen, FSE

The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist were founded on December 2, 1973. Mother Rosemae Pender, Foundress (left), and Mother Shaun Vergauwen, Co-Foundress (lower right), along with 53 other Sisters of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, La Crosse, Wisconsin, became the first Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist.

Mother Rosemae had held leadership positions in the former order, having been a teacher, a principal, a college professor, the director of postulants, the director of Junior Sisters and a member of the General Council. Mother Rosemae served as the Mother General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist since its founding until 2005.

Mother Shaun had been a teacher in Wisconsin and Iowa schools, and the Dean of Students at Viterbo College in La Crosse. She had also ministered in a social work program in Appalachia. Mother Shaun served as the Vicar General of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist since its founding until she was elected Mother General in 2005. A licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, she is the foundress and executive director of the Franciscan Life Center, Meriden, Connecticut, and the Franciscan Life Center Network.
